Do you suffer with nagging sinus problems and pain? Some people experience sinus pressure and headaches from childhood. Others develop discomfort in the sinus cavities over time. People with sinusitis often have swelling and pain in and around the eyes, cheeks, forehead, and nose. “Chronic sinusitis” is defined as sinusitis that persists for 12 weeks or longer, despite treatment. Causes of the condition include sinus infection, deviated septum, and polyps, which are abnormal growths in the sinus cavities.
If you suffer from any combination of the following symptoms, the first step toward relief is scheduling an appointment with Dr. Bradford Ress, a Boca Raton ENT (ear, nose, and throat doctor). He will conduct a thorough exam, talk with you about your symptoms, and provide treatment options to relieve your sinus pain, so you can enjoy life again.
- Tenderness, swelling, or pain in the face, specifically around the eyes, nose, cheeks, and/or forehead.
- Mucous drainage in the back of the throat. This is commonly called postnasal drainage and can cause a sore throat, as well as bad breath.
- Difficulty breathing through your nose, due to an obstruction or congestion in the sinus cavities.
- Inability to smell odors.
- Weakened or absent sense of taste.
- A cough that worsens when you lie down.
- Irritability and tiredness.
- Pain in the jaw and teeth. Sinusitis is sometimes misdiagnosed by a patient as a toothache.
Sinus pain caused by an infection is usually initiated by a virus, and this type of sinusitis is contagious. Other times, sinus infection begins when a person comes in contact with particular bacteria or fungi. If you experience chronic sinus infections, medications do not help your condition, or an infection lasts more than one full week (with treatment), your general physician may refer you to a specialist, an ENT like Dr. Ress, for an exam and treatment.
Inside the sinus cavity, soft, non-cancerous growths may develop; these are nasal polyps, and they may cause an obstruction that interferes with breathing. Asthma, chronic sinus infections, some immune disorders, and allergies can trigger the development of polyps. If medication is ineffective, surgery will be required to remove the growths, but they do not have to be removed unless they cause sinus pain or breathing problems. Even after removal, polyps may re-grow.
The septum is the dividing structure between a person’s nostrils. When the septum is displaced, one nostril may become partially or fully blocked. Displacement occurs naturally in some individuals, but it may also be the result of an injury, such as a broken nose. Deviated septum usually causes breathing and sinus problems, and some patients experience dryness, pain, and/or bleeding. When a deviated septum causes discomfort, chronic dry mouth, or poor sleep, surgery can correct the issue.
